Total War has come a long way from the papery maps of Shogun, but its form is the same. What a beautiful board it is - an intricate papier mache caricature of Europe, decorated with landmarks, rivers and exaggerated topography. But will they talk of the fleet barely a mile away that sat still and watched the great man lemming his way into the history books? Do they realise that the patriot they adored was sent intentionally to his death? I wonder what that would do if they knew that the fate of Crassipes and all the armies and settlements of Rome were not beholden to the gods, but to one bearded games journalist moving them like pawns on a vast playing board. They'll talk of how he burned the gates and took the central square, and how a dozen Averni javelins ended his illustrious command of Legio I Italica there. They'll talk proudly of how the great general threw himself against the walls of Massalia. On top of that they just ran back into the city and the following turn I had to fight them again. The Roman senate will weep for Crassipes. Well, I beat them back and won, but not without serious losses on my part. They did a good job of ignoring my support army and caused some serious hurt by focusing on my main one. So I've got to fight them going up hill and with my other five units marching in. It's outside of the town and I'm at a huge disadvantage because they are proactive and set up their defense on top of the city hill, well outside of the city. End turn, they sally forth and pick a fight. So I moved both to within support range and siege the town. One general and just their weaker garrison. I decided to pick a fight with the Brutii to take Cosentia. I fired up a new Julii campaign and it starts with the Brutii and Etruscans as vassels who hate you. Jury is still out, but I think I like it better than vanilla or DeI.Īs an example, I had a pleasantly unexpected surprise I just this past weekend. R2TR 3, so far, feels a lot more dynamic. When I played DeI it pretty much always boiled down to battle line push-fest until I could eventually sneak some skirmishers around the side and launch rock, arrows or javelins into their backs, or the classic hammer and anvil attack.

The battle system though is a whole new beast. The campaign side is definitely more complex, but still not so complex as DeI, feels more vanilla. I checked it out awhile back, but wanted to see the new changes now that I'm between campaigns.

Right now I'm really getting into R2TR 3. With four kids though I cut back on mods and decided DeI just took too long to play and went back to vanilla for awhile. I played through a couple of 40 turn or so DeI campaigns a couple of years ago because I wanted something like Roma Surrectum, which I played for years, RTR and EB-I some prior to that.
